Cryogenic Coolers Print

With more than 30 years of experience and over 65.000 coolers manufactured, Thales Cryogenics is an authority in the field of miniature cryocoolers. Our products offer a complete range of cooling solutions, spanning from lightweight rotary mono-bloc and linear dual opposed piston coolers to very fast Joule Thomson coolers.  This whole range has proven to provide excellent performance under extreme conditions, combining high reliability with affordability.  Utilizing the latest innovative design and manufacturing techniques, Thales Cryogenics has become the world’s innovation leader in miniature Stirling and Pulse tube coolers.

Various Cryocoolers

Our coolers can perform in an operating ambient temperature range from -52 °C to + 71 °C and deliver cooling powers ranging from 300 mW up to more than 15000 mW at tip temperatures in the range of 60 - 120 K, with respective cold fingers from 5 to 35 mm in diameter. Thales Cryogenics, as part of the worldwide Thales Group, has direct access to high-level expertise, science and advanced technologies. This covers a broad range of disciplines such as electronics, advanced system simulations, computer aided engineering systems, along with an extensive knowledge of both military and civil specifications. Thales Cryogenics holds an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 quality assurance certificate.

Modularity, Flexibility, Versatility and simple system integration

In our split Stirling coolers, the design of compressor and cold finger is modular. This modular concept enables us to propose a range of cold fingers all using the same compressor. Also, for a given dewar or cold finger, we can propose a range of different compressors to have the best possible match with the requirements of the application. With our split Stirling and Pulse Tube coolers, the cold finger and compressor are joined by a malleable gas transfer line which can be tailor made in length and shape. Also different cold finger flange designs ensure a maximum flexibility in finding customer dedicated cooling solutions. Thales Cryogenics can also offer integration support by providing training.

Qualified Manufacturing

Most of our processes are internally qualified on a regular basis to assure constant quality, efficiency and reliability. Our coolers are assembled under clean room conditions to eliminate contaminations and to ensure quality. Thales Cryogenics uses advanced manufacturing techniques such as laser and electron beam welding to hermetically seal its coolers. Another example of our qualified manufacturing processes is the automatic stacking of regenerator material into the displacer, which results in a constant quality, high efficiency, production reproducibility and thus cooler.

Reliability and robustness

As part of the qualification process, all our coolers are subjected to severe environmental, climatic, mechanical, and lifetime tests. These tests have repeatedly demonstrated the excellent reliability and durability of our coolers.

Low exported vibration levels

Exported vibrations generated by an operating cooler can be critical in specific applications. The impact of the vibrations is not only determined by the cooler itself but also influenced by the way the cooler is integrated in the system. For the different types of coolers different design philosophies have been used. Our Rotary Monobloc coolers are internally balanced and are among the quietest in the world. This makes them particularly suited for low acoustic noise applications. Dual opposed linear motors are used on all our Linear Stirling and Pulse Tube coolers in order to minimize compressor vibrations and acoustic noise levels. Our range of Pulse Tube coolers is specifically designed to have the correct balance between efficiency, size and extremely low exported vibrations from the cold finger.
