In order to drive cryogenic coolers in demanding environments, Thales Cryogenics
has developed a range of Cooler Drive Electronics that operate under a wide range of ambient
tempereatures while maintaining excellent stability.
Depending on the requirements, Cooler Drive Electronics
operate from AC mains or from a unregulated DC voltage bus.
Design FeaturesCooler Drive Electronics for Linear Cryocoolers
The UA 707x series converter operates from an unregulated DC input and produces a precisely controlled sinusoidal AC supply, which meets the drive requirements of the cryogenic cooler.
These include:- Temperature-dependent voltage regulation to ensure that the maximum permissible output voltage is not exceeded during operation.
- Controlled increase in output power during cool down to protect the cryogenic cooler against surge currents.
- Sinusoidal output with low harmonic content for maximum efficiency and minimum EMI.
The Cooler Drive Electronics supply a DC current to the temperature diode in the dewar and produces a tell back signal when cool down is complete. After cool down a demand control loop varies the converter output power as necessary to maintain close control of the detector operating temperature.
The Cooler Drive Electronics can be synchronised from an external 50 Hz source; a “remote-off” function is incorporated.
Cooler Drive Electronics for Rotary Cryocoolers
These Cooler Drive Electronics are designed to drive cryogenic rotary coolers. These electronics operate from a single DC power supply.
These include:- Three phases output voltage for DC brushless motor drive.
- DC current supply for the temperature diode in the dewar.
- Full integrated temperature regulation.
