Introduction
The cryogenic cooler is a sealed, Stirling-cycle device, with the compressor and cold finger constructed as separate components connected via a malleable metal transfer line. This "split" configuration provides maximum flexibility in system design and isolates the cooled object from the compressor-induced vibration or EMI
Linear Cryocoolers are available in a comprehensive range of versions to match virtually any dewar and will produce and sustain a detector operating temperature of typically 80 K at ambient temperatures up to +71°C. Lower or higher detector temperatures can be reached depending on the actual required cooling power and the permissible input power to the cooler.
Linear Stirling cryocoolers are available in two types:- Conventional Bearing cryocoolers. Allow for a lightweight and small design.
- Flexure Bearing cryocoolers. Industrial applications require maintenance free lifetimes in the order of five years, and military applications require high lifetimes under severe conditons in order to reduce operational cost. Recognizing this trend, Thales Cryogenics has been one of the first companies to offer a solution that eliminates virtually all wear in the cryocooler, thus resulting in a unequaled range of full flexure supported cryocooler compressors for low cost prices.
- Dual opposed pistons driven by linear motors minimise compressor vibration and acoustic noise.
- The cryogenic cooler has no rotating parts and no friction seals.
- No maintenance is required, the coolers are sealed for life by laserwelding technologies.
- The cooler contains no lubricants.
- Cooling power and thus detector temperature is related to input power and can be easily controlled.
- Available in different hermetically sealed slip-on and IDCA configurations.
- Heatstop: The UP7080 and UP7086 series are standard equipped with a Heatstop® in the cold finger or transfer line. This Heatstop® reduces the heatflow from the compressor to the cold finger. This reduces the required heatsink capacity at the warm end of the cold finger.
- Flexure-bearing suspension.
- Moving magnet technology.
- Wear is virtually zero.
- 2nd Generation is 33% smaller and lighter.
The commonality concept applied in the compressor design allows for a common compressor design, which can be tuned to match different sizes of cold fingers.
